Madison at 75th: the granite building stepping out over the moat, the bridge in, the concrete coffered ceilings, the trapezoid window, the works in the great fourth floor gallery.
Marcel Breuer designed the granite building at 945 Madison Avenue with Hamilton Smith, and it opened in 1966 as the Whitney Museum. The Met ran it as the Met Breuer from 2016 to 2020, and the Frick showed its collection there from 2021 to 2024 while its mansion was renovated. Sotheby's bought the building in 2023.

The three cantilevered granite storeys each overhanging the one below, the sunken sculpture court and the concrete bridge over it, the single angled window on the facade, the bush hammered concrete inside, the bluestone floors, the grid of circular ceiling lights. Mood: granite grey noon. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
