Amsterdam Avenue, the great west front, then a nave the length of two blocks under a rose window, chapels in the apse, candles everywhere.
The cornerstone was laid in 1892 on Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street. Heins and LaFarge began it in the Romanesque style, and Ralph Adams Cram recast it as Gothic after 1911. The nave opened in 1941, the day before Pearl Harbor. At 601 feet long it is one of the largest churches in the world, and it is still unfinished.

The unfinished gothic west front with its portal and rose window, a nave of pointed arcades and clerestory, the ribbed vault, the seven chapels of the apse, the great organ. Mood: candlelight. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
