The Renaissance Revival landmark at 22nd Street, six floors of dark galleries where the photographs glow, the bar at the top, the works lit like prints in the dark.
The Church Missions House at 281 Park Avenue South was built between 1892 and 1894 to designs by Robert W. Gibson and Edward J. Neville Stent, and the city landmarked it in 1979. Fotografiska, the photography museum founded in Stockholm in 2010, opened its New York branch in the building in December 2019. Its galleries are kept dark so the prints carry the light.

The 1894 brick and terracotta church missions house with its arched loggia, the black painted galleries with spot lit photographs, the wide stair, the top floor restaurant with its arched windows over the avenue. Mood: park avenue south, after nine. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
