USS Intrepid, an Essex class aircraft carrier, was commissioned in 1943 and survived kamikaze attacks in the Pacific during World War II. It later served in Vietnam and recovered Mercury and Gemini space capsules. The ship opened as a museum at Pier 86 on the Hudson in 1982, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise joined it on the flight deck in 2012.

The grey Essex class carrier with its angled flight deck and island superstructure, the jets and helicopters parked along the deck, the space shuttle pavilion aft, the hangar deck open below, the Hudson and New Jersey beyond. Mood: hudson wind. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
