The first New York City Marathon in 1970 ran loops of Central Park with 127 starters, organized by Fred Lebow and New York Road Runners. The race went through all five boroughs in 1976 and now starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. Runners cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, opened in 1964 and designed by Othmar Ammann, then the longest suspension span in the world.
