The Met's American Wing opened in 1924. The Charles Engelhard Court, a glass roofed garden court by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates, opened in 1980 and was renovated in 2009. Its centerpiece is the marble facade of the Branch Bank of the United States, built on Wall Street in 1824 and moved to the museum, with a loggia by Louis Comfort Tiffany from his estate Laurelton Hall.

The sloping glass wall onto the park, the neoclassical marble bank facade standing inside, the loggia of columns with its glass mosaic, the bronze figures and fountains, the mezzanine balcony with its balustrade. Mood: winter light through the wall of glass. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
