The New-York Historical Society was founded in 1804 and is the oldest museum in New York City. Its granite building on Central Park West at 77th Street, designed by York and Sawyer, opened in 1908. The collection includes John James Audubon's watercolors for The Birds of America and a large group of Tiffany lamps.

The Roman Eclectic granite facade with its Ionic columns and bronze doors, the entrance hall with the mural and the wall of Tiffany lamps upstairs, the Luce Center of open storage, the reading room with green shaded lamps. Mood: central park west, a school morning. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
