Eero Saarinen designed the TWA Flight Center at Idlewild Airport, now JFK. It opened in 1962, a year after his death, with a concrete roof shaped like wings and red carpeted tubes leading to the gates. Trans World Airlines used it until the airline ended in 2001. It reopened in 2019 as the lobby of the TWA Hotel, with a 1958 Lockheed Constellation parked outside as a bar.

The winged concrete shell and its four vaults, the sunken conversation pit in red, the split flap board, the curved tube corridors, the airliner at the gate. Mood: jet age. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
