The boardwalk at dusk, the wheel turning, the Cyclone roaring, the census hung on bathhouse walls facing the sea.

Coney Island became the city's seaside playground in the late 1800s, with Steeplechase Park opening in 1897, Luna Park in 1903, and Dreamland in 1904. The Riegelmann Boardwalk opened in 1923. The Wonder Wheel has turned since 1920 and the Cyclone since 1927, and both are city landmarks.

The timber boardwalk and white rails, the wheel with swinging cars, the wooden coaster trestles, the Parachute Jump lattice. Mood: summer dusk. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
