The Guggenheim Museum opened on October 21, 1959, on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street. Frank Lloyd Wright designed it as a single ramp spiraling up a quarter mile under a skylight. Wright died six months before it opened. In 2019 UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List with seven other Wright buildings.

A continuous helical ramp widening as it rises, banded parapets, the ribbed circular skylight, the open rotunda void. Mood: a continuous journey. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
