The oldest bridge in the city, an aqueduct on stone arches across the Harlem River, the walk on top from the Bronx to the water tower on the Manhattan bluff.
The High Bridge opened in 1848 to carry the Croton Aqueduct across the Harlem River into Manhattan, and it is the oldest standing bridge in the city. Its stone arches were built after the Roman model. A steel arch replaced the river spans in 1928 to clear shipping. The Highbridge Water Tower rose on the Manhattan side in 1872. Closed to walkers in 1970, the bridge reopened in 2015.

The tall masonry arches on the Bronx bank and the steel arch over the river, the brick paved walkway with iron railings and lamps, the octagonal water tower on the Manhattan cliff, the river and the Deegan below. Mood: blue hour. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
