Fifty third Street under the black glass, the lobby, then the atrium: a white shaft of light six storeys tall, bridges crossing it, the escalators, a mobile turning above, the works on the great walls.
MoMA was founded in 1929 by Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Its 53rd Street building by Philip Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone opened in 1939. Yoshio Taniguchi's expansion opened in 2004 with a 110 foot atrium at the center, and Diller Scofidio and Renfro's expansion followed in 2019.

The sheer white atrium with its cut through balconies at every level, the glass bridges, the grand stair, the mobile hung in the void, the escalators seen through glass, the garden through the wall of windows. Mood: free friday, six o'clock. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
