The Bowery with its restaurant supply stores, then the seven shifted boxes in silver mesh, the tall gallery with the light slot, the sky room at the top, the works on raw white walls.
Marcia Tucker founded the New Museum in 1977 to show living artists. Its building on the Bowery, seven shifted boxes wrapped in aluminum mesh, was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA and opened in 2007. An expansion by OMA next door opened in 2025.

The stack of aluminium mesh clad boxes each shifted off the one below, the slot windows where the shifts open, the double height gallery with a skylight strip, the green elevator, the sky room with its wraparound terrace. Mood: bowery, late afternoon. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
