Charles McKim designed the library for J. Pierpont Morgan next to his home on Madison Avenue at 36th Street, built from 1902 to 1906. The East Room holds three tiers of walnut bookcases under a painted ceiling. Morgan's son made it a public institution in 1924. Renzo Piano's expansion in 2006 joined the buildings, and the collection holds three Gutenberg Bibles.

The McKim palazzo of dry laid marble, the East Room of triple tiered inlaid walnut bookcases behind bronze grilles, the narrow balconies, the tapestry over the fireplace, the lunettes and the painted ceiling. Mood: reading lamp afternoon. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
