Sixth Avenue under the marquee, the grand foyer, then the auditorium: the sunrise arches of the proscenium, the great stage, the works as the show.
Radio City Music Hall opened on December 27, 1932, as part of Rockefeller Center. Edward Durell Stone was its architect and Donald Deskey designed the interiors. Its proscenium arches rise like a sunrise over a stage 144 feet wide, and the house seats about 6,000. The Rockettes have danced here since it opened. The city made it a landmark in 1978 after plans to close it.

The neon marquee wrapping the corner, the grand foyer with its gold mural and chandeliers, the telescoping plaster arches of the auditorium radiating from the stage, the deep red seats, the gold curtain. Mood: house lights down. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
