Ronald Lauder and Serge Sabarsky founded the Neue Galerie for German and Austrian art, and it opened in 2001 in the William Starr Miller mansion at 1048 Fifth Avenue, built in 1914 by Carrere and Hastings. In 2006 Lauder bought Gustav Klimt's 1907 Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I after its restitution to Maria Altmann. Cafe Sabarsky on the ground floor serves Viennese food.

The Beaux Arts limestone mansion with iron and glass canopy, the spiral marble staircase, the wood panelled galleries with the Vienna 1900 furniture, the café with bentwood chairs and a display of cakes. Mood: café hour. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
