A block of industrial Queens, the concrete block building and the walled garden: basalt and granite standing in gravel under a katsura tree, the open air gallery, the works among the stones.
Isamu Noguchi designed and opened his own museum in 1985 in a converted factory building across from his Long Island City studio. The galleries and walled garden hold his stone, metal and wood sculpture, his Akari light sculptures and models for his gardens and playgrounds. He died in 1988, and the museum stays as he arranged it.

The plain concrete block and brick factory with its open roofed first gallery, the garden of stones on raked gravel with bamboo and a katsura, the water sculpture, the paper lanterns hung inside, the raw light. Mood: vernon boulevard, still. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
