The reclaimed lot on the East River: big sculpture on the lawn, the cove and the island across the water, kayaks pulled up, the works standing in the open air.
Sculptor Mark di Suvero led a group of artists and neighbors who turned an abandoned landfill on the East River in Long Island City into Socrates Sculpture Park in 1986. It became a city park in 1998. It shows large outdoor sculpture and stays free and open every day.

The open waterfront lawn with monumental outdoor sculpture, the wooden studio shed and gate of found steel, the rocky shore and kayak launch, Roosevelt Island and the Manhattan skyline across the river. Mood: wind off hallets cove. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
