Rockaway Beach runs along the Atlantic side of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens, and NYC Parks calls it the largest urban beach in the United States. Hurricane Sandy destroyed the wooden boardwalk in October 2012, and the city rebuilt it in concrete, finishing in 2017. It holds the only beaches in New York City where surfing is allowed.

The long new concrete boardwalk with its curved shade shelters, the numbered lifeguard chairs, the dune grass and fences, the surf break at the jetties, the elevated A train and the low bungalows. Mood: sunrise swell. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
