The telescoping shell on its rails rolling out over the plaza to make the McCourt, the pillow skin lit from within, the works inside the hall and up on the gallery levels.
The Shed opened in April 2019 at Hudson Yards, designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro with Rockwell Group. Its outer shell, clad in translucent plastic cushions, rolls out on rails over the plaza to enclose a hall called the McCourt. The building commissions new work across performance, visual art and music.

The quilted translucent shell on giant wheels sliding on rails out from the base building, the McCourt hall it encloses, the exposed steel diagrid, the plaza and the Vessel beyond, the High Line spur. Mood: opening night at hudson yards. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
