The Roosevelt Island Tramway opened in 1976 as the first aerial tramway used for public transit in the United States. It was meant as a stopgap until the subway reached the island, which took until 1989, but riders kept it. The cabins cross the East River beside the Queensboro Bridge in about three minutes. New cabins and towers replaced the originals in 2010.
