The Unisphere was the symbol of the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens. Gilmore D. Clarke designed the stainless steel globe, 140 feet tall and 120 feet across, and United States Steel built it. The park had also hosted the 1939 World's Fair on what had been an ash dump. The Unisphere became a city landmark in 1995.

The open steel lattice globe with continents in relief, three orbit rings, the circular fountain basin, the pavilion towers beyond. Mood: worlds within worlds. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
