Wollman Rink opened in 1950 in the southeast corner of Central Park, paid for by a gift from Kate Wollman in memory of her family. It replaced skating on the Pond, which had drawn crowds since the park opened. The rink sits below the towers of Central Park South and has appeared in many films.

The oval rink below the outcrops, the Midtown towers rising over bare trees, the boards, the rental house and terrace, snow on every ledge. Mood: december night. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
