The New York Botanical Garden was founded in 1891 on 250 acres in the Bronx. Its glasshouse, now the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, opened in 1902. The firm Lord and Burnham designed it after the Palm House at Kew. The garden also holds a 50 acre stand of old growth forest that was never cleared.

The glazed nave and central dome with lantern, white iron ribs, tropical planting and a still pool. Mood: morning light. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
