The Bronx Museum of the Arts was founded in 1971 and moved in 1982 into a former synagogue at 1040 Grand Concourse at 165th Street. Arquitectonica's 2006 expansion gave it the folded metal and glass front on the Concourse. The museum focuses on artists of the Bronx and of African, Asian and Latin American descent, and admission is free.

The pleated aluminium and glass facade folding along the Concourse, the tall lobby with its stair, the flexible white galleries, the north wing courtyard, the Deco buildings across the boulevard with their casement corners. Mood: grand concourse, friday. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
