The Brooklyn Museum traces its origins to the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library of 1823. Its Beaux Arts building by McKim, Mead and White opened in 1897, and the glass entrance pavilion by Polshek Partnership opened in 2004. The museum is known for its Egyptian collection and holds Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party.

The McKim Mead and White facade with its columns and the modern glass entrance pavilion, the fanned plaza steps and the jet fountains, the Beaux-Arts Court with its translucent glass floor, arcaded gallery and skylight, the museum's Rodin bronzes. Mood: first saturday. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
