The Chrysler Building was completed in 1930 to a design by William Van Alen. Its steel spire was assembled in secret inside the tower and raised through the roof to reach 1,046 feet and claim the title of world's tallest building. It held the title for eleven months until the Empire State Building. The lobby ceiling carries a mural by Edward Trumbull, and the elevator doors are inlaid wood.
