The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 and opened its Fifth Avenue building in 1880, designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden opened in 1987 above the modern wing. Since then the museum has invited one artist each season to make a work for the roof.

Limestone parapets over the park canopy, freestanding sculpture on the terrace, the midtown skyline as backdrop. Mood: golden hour. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
