The first subway line opened on October 27, 1904, run by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. It ran from City Hall north to 145th Street. The architects Heins and LaFarge designed the original stations with ceramic tile and mosaic name plaques. The system now runs 24 hours a day on more than 470 stations.
