The tall ship

South Street Seaport, the history

South Street was the city's main port in the age of sail. Schermerhorn Row, the brick counting houses on Fulton Street, was built in 1811 and 1812. The Fulton Fish Market traded here from 1822 until it moved to the Bronx in 2005. The South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967 and keeps the 1885 ship Wavertree at Pier 16.

What the room is built from

The Schermerhorn Row brick warehouses, Belgian block paving, the iron and timber pier, a three masted ship with yards and rigging, the bridge over the rooftops. Mood: morning fog lifting. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
