A tar roof above the murals, water towers and string lights, the neighbouring walls painted the size of buildings with the census.
This room stands for the rooftops of Bushwick, Brooklyn. The Dutch chartered the town as Boswijck in 1661, and in the 1800s it became the city's brewery district. Since 2011 Joseph Ficalora has invited artists to paint the walls around Troutman Street and St. Nicholas Avenue as the Bushwick Collective, an open air mural gallery that changes every year.

The tar paper roof with bulkhead and water towers, the painted party walls of the surrounding lofts, string lights on posts, the el and the skyline at dusk, a projector on a bedsheet. Mood: the party at dusk. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
