The Panorama of the city, every borough in miniature under a hall, its lights cycling from day to dusk, a glass walkway around it, the works on the walls above.
The Panorama was built for the 1964 World's Fair at the order of Robert Moses. Raymond Lester and Associates made it: every building in the five boroughs at a scale of one inch to 100 feet, on 9,335 square feet. It was updated in 1992 and holds about 895,000 buildings. The hall around it is the New York City Building from the 1939 fair, where the United Nations General Assembly met from 1946 to 1950.

The 1964 scale model of all five boroughs with its rivers and bridges, the darkened hall with a raised ramped walkway circling the model, the day to night lighting cycle, the Unisphere outside the glass. Mood: model dusk cycle. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
